The Society has raised a commemorative bust to Robert Burns as a gift to the City of Houston. The bronze bust is mounted on red Texas granite and is located in the International Commemorative Sculpture Garden in Hermann Park. The project was totally funded by donations from members and friends, no corporate donations were solicited or accepted, making this a true gift from the Scottish Community.
Meetings - visitors and new members are always welcome to attend the monthly meetings of this fun club. Together we enjoy discussions and readings of his poetry, prose, letters; and the history surrounding Robert Burns' time.
The club will provide experienced talented speakers for the speeches or recitations of the poems at your Burns Night celebration. We do this to honor the memory of Robert Burns and do not ask for fees.
Every year the Heather and Thistle Society have the Annual Burns Supper where several hundred people gather to celebrate the contribution Robert Burns made to the world.
Burns Suppers have been part of Scottish culture for about 200 years as a means of commemorating our best loved bard (a tribal poet-singer skilled in composing and reciting verses on heroes and their deeds). And when Burns immortalized haggis in verse he created a central link that is maintained to this day.
The ritual was started by close friends of Robert Burns a few years after his death in 1796 as a tribute to his memory. The basic format for the evening has remained unchanged since that time and begins when the chairman invites the company to receive the haggis.
